Once the mansion of a famous Athenian family, the Eridanus was converted to a hotel for the Olympics, and has become an enchantingly peaceful and intimate choice on the Athens hotel scene, and remarkably well priced for the five-star ambience.Although situated on a busy, unappealing road, you utterly forget that fact as soon as you step inside. With only 38 rooms, the service is warm and personal, and the public areas attractive, with classically-inspired abstract art and an unusual use of space. The rooms are a treat, with big embracing beds with crisp bedlinen and excellent, subtle use of colours and light. Low tables give a vaguely east Asian feel in some rooms, while the bathrooms, in noble green marble, are perhaps Athens' most attractive. There's Internet access in all rooms. The higher-grade rooms - some with views over the nearby Keramikos to the Acropolis - have hydromassage showers, while those at the front are all double glazed for sound insulation, which works very well. There are numerous generous touches - free soft drinks replenished daily, free tea/coffee, children under-12 free - that make this place stand out. There's also parking available, and two on-site restaurants (one French, one Greek), which both have lofty reputations in Athens.

Right across the road, the Keramikos is a large, rambling archaeological site that was Athens' cemetery for over a millennium. It's a lovely place to wander, with plenty of greenery, and an astonishing array of funerary monuments and a museum.
The Eridanus was a stream that once ran through ancient Athens, including the Keramikos. During the 1990s, engineers were less than pleased to rediscover it still flowing underground, when they were trying to build the Athens metro!
