Once the mansion of a famous Athenian family, the Eridanus was converted to a hotel for the Olympics, and has become an enchantingly peaceful and intimate choice on the Athens hotel scene, and remarkably well priced for the five-star ambience.

Although situated on a busy, unappealing road, you utterly forget that fact as soon as you step inside. With only 38 rooms, the service is warm and personal, and the public areas attractive, with classically-inspired abstract art and an unusual use of space. The rooms are a treat, with big embracing beds with crisp bedlinen and excellent, subtle use of colours and light. Low tables give a vaguely east Asian feel in some rooms, while the bathrooms, in noble green marble, are perhaps Athens' most attractive. There's Internet access in all rooms. The higher-grade rooms - some with views over the nearby Keramikos to the Acropolis - have hydromassage showers, while those at the front are all double glazed for sound insulation, which works very well. There are numerous generous touches - free soft drinks replenished daily, free tea/coffee, children under-12 free - that make this place stand out. There's also parking available, and two on-site restaurants (one French, one Greek), which both have lofty reputations in Athens.
