Looming large over the bustle of Udaipur's Battiyanni Chotta is the ever-welcoming Kumbha Palace. No worries about the nearby rickshaw-heavy hubbub creeping into your sleep, though - the guesthouse is 50m from the main road and in its own quiet world.Run by a Dutch-Indian couple, who seem to be in the know regarding travellers' wants, Kumbha Palace is cheap, clean and friendly. There's nothing luxurious about this place. The basic rooms are functional with snazzy touches like unworn tapestries and coloured-glass windows. Rooms (except for the small ones) come with an attached bath and air coolers. Get yourself a cup of real filter coffee or some Indian or Continental food, and hang out a while on the rooftop restaurant. Better yet, laze in the lovely gardened lawn out back. The owners also book well-reputed horse safaris (from 2.5 hours to full-day excursions), which leave from their farm, Krishna Ranch, 7km (4mi) out of town. Whether you safari or not, you can book a stay at one of the ranch's cottages, if you fancy some country livin'.
