Formerly the maharana's guest quarters, this restored historic hotel spread over regal grounds in the City Palace complex makes for a majestic stay. The ornate architecture, romantic terraces and elegant courtyard are only the half of it.

A convivial courtyard surrounds a petite glassy-watered pool - though, perhaps due to lack of privacy, more people seem to be around the pool than in it. Of the hotel's 36 rooms, the suites are in the oval layout surrounding the courtyard. The upper level contains the terrace suites, which are the smartest way to go here; they're simply stacked with goods: private balconies offering a city view, lake view or both, plus plasma TV, small jacuzzi tub and heaps of space. The Imperial Suite holds a fountain - yes, inside - and other suites are unique with historic royal decor, silver-coated furnishings and impressive glass-inlay work. The modern, least expensive rooms are not quite as enticing, though they do have all the mod cons and city views. On-site lures include Indian and Continental food, as well as a tantalising menu of Ayurvedic services available at the hotel's spa.
