Valencia's first luxury hotel has, despite its thorough overhaul in 2004, been overtaken by more modern, more client-oriented alternatives. But if you go for faded charm and favour a central position just off the town hall square, you'll be more than contented.Constructed in 1913, the Reina Victoria was for ages Valencia's premier upmarket hotel, favoured by bullfighters, entertainers, King Alfonso XIII and others of the great and good who passed through the city. It still exudes history, from the lovely wrought-iron-and-glass canopy over the entrance to the splendid Bar Ingle's carved, polished woodwork. Bedrooms are large (singles are particularly roomy), all with bathtubs, parquet floors, warm yellow Provencal-style bedspreads and blue furnishings. There are a couple for the handicapped and a few have small street-facing balconies that come at no extra cost. Some of the staff, however, need a jolt. The dour pair at reception, from the evidence of our most recent visit, could benefit from a charm school refresher course. There's wi-fi but - typical in a way of this hotel that so nearly makes it - only in certain areas.

Go right (east) along Calle Barcas for 200m, then left up Calle Poeta Querol for the National Ceramics Museum with more pots and plates then you've ever seen assembled in one spot and a magnificent, cascading rococo facade.
A prominent Spanish guidebook claims that Queen Victoria, whose name the hotel bears, slept in this grand hotel, constructed in 1913. Unlikely, however, since Her Majesty died in 1901…
