Puerta Valencia is a hip, arty option, its corridors and rooms hung with original abstract canvases. Leave behind its dreary neighbourhood, step inside and cocoon yourself within. Staff are young, keen and friendly, rooms large and tastefully furnished. The cuisine in both restaurant and cafeteria merits a visit in its own right.

Puerta Valencia, a member of the Silken hotel group, proclaims its own original identity, a world away from big chain cloning. You get the idea from first glimpse. This huge glass cube of a hotel has been scribbled all over by Javier Mariscal, the Valencian artist who designed, among a whole lot else, the mascot for the Barcelona Olympic games. The reception area is bright and cheerful, as are the staff. Bedrooms, in cream and cherry hues, have sleek furniture. Bathrooms in white marble flecked with grey are innovative, with square sinks, stubby taps and an armload of Mariscal-designed gift toiletries. Half of the 7th floor executive doubles have particularly large terraces, though the noise from the busy avenue below may drive you back inside.
