Only a busy highway separates this squat, cuboid block from the America's Cup inner port, but never fear - soundproofing is excellent and rooms overlook a couple of quiet squares. Bedrooms, where black contrasts with the dominant whites and creams, are comfortable and well furnished.

Don't be put off by the inauspicious entrance and cramped reception desk. There's a bar in this bleak area of marble and unfinished concrete but you'd feel like a goldfish as passers-by stare in through the tall windows. Penetrate deeper, though, and you'll find a more-than-decent restaurant that serves breakfast until midday - ideal for night owls. Off-white walls and fabrics contrast with the dark work surfaces and bedheads in the rooms. Bathrooms have separate toilet and bath areas, marble washbasins, bathtubs and showerheads as big as dinnerplates. For better views and more light, choose one of the six corner rooms with their two large windows facing each of the squares. Up high, there's a small gym and from the rooftop terrace there's a magnificent panorama of the port, sea and city.
