It's all about the details at this luxurious downtown gem that combines European elegance with a North American flair for good service. Located right in the heart of the downtown core, the hustle and bustle of nearby Robson St seems a world away once you're inside.

This 83-room Vancouver classic routinely ranks as one of the world's best lodgings in travel industry surveys and the reasons are obvious: the property is dripping with top-hatted charm, the personalised service is second to none and the graceful rooms and suites are stuffed with chic flourishes. All rooms are lined with high-quality reproduction antiques and have balconies overlooking the plebs below. If you can't stretch your budget for a penthouse - complete with fireplaces and private terraces - the small but perfectly formed junior suites are recommended. Don't hang out in your room: don your monocle and head for the piano lounge next to the lobby. Full of overstuffed leather chairs, dark wood tables and a giant roaring fireplace, it's a great spot to order a glass of brandy and hang out on a dank winter day. Unless you'd prefer the on-site Venetian spa with its eucalyptus steam room.
