Lord it over the neighbours at the Ducal Palace next door at this historic hotel, with terrace rooms in the "Danielino" guest wing updated in 2008 by modern-luxe master Jacques Garcia and a top-floor restaurant with a top chef to match.

Since the 19th century, the Danieli has been a favourite with artists and their royal patrons. From the moment you enter the soaring triple-height Venetian-Gothic lobby, you'll see why. The Danieli is three linked palaces - history buffs will prefer the frescoed, antique-filled rooms in the 14th-century casa vecchia (old house), built for Doge Enrico Dandolo with 2nd-floor ceilings about 3m high. Traditionalists who prefer a more cosy feel will enjoy the handsome Venetian-style rooms in the casa nuova (new house). But for a signature blend of modern and baroque, book a room at the Danielino, where Jacques Garcia's multi-million-euro redesign thoughtfully preserved ochre-marble bathroom finishes and 1930s chandeliers, while refocusing attention on such luxurious details as hand-rubbed cream Venetian-plaster walls and deep red silk blackout curtains.
