Lonely Planet review

The small reception area is spare and modern, but upstairs the guestrooms swing from stark to effortless elegance - and you can't argue with the central location, on the pedestrian route that joins Rialto and Piazza San Marco.Rebelling against the de riguer damasks and deep-red colour schemes Venetian dogi (dukes) and hotels have in common, La Scala opts for an uncluttered look in tranquil tones of pale green and cream. Guestrooms span four floors and feature en suite bathrooms that gleam with mosaic tiles. Rooms overlooking the busy Calle dei Fabbri can be noisy, but you do get to inhale the homey smell of freshly baked bread from the bakery downstairs. The two suites (double room plus sitting room with sofa bed) have the same easy elegance, though are more a practical family option than a pampering treat.
