An authentic family-run Venetian pensione, packed with old world charm and mystery-novel mystique: stunning Venetian vetro a piombo (lead glass), antique mirrors slightly clouded as though they've seen a ghost, even staff dressed in traditional maid's outfits with white aprons. Almost all 34 rooms have canal views, and 24 have en suite bathrooms. This place has all the makings of an Agatha Christie novel, with period furnishings that include an early 20th-century plate warmer that looks like a radiator, sloping terrazzo alla Veneziana (Venetian marble) floors, and a grandfather clock that ticked its last decades ago. The rooms facing the Canale della Giudecca are the largest, but they don't have en suite bathrooms - No 37 has a porcelain sink and bidet in the room, but the tub is across the hall. No 47 is a compact but winsome double with en suite shower room and views of the side canal converging with the Giudecca Canal. The antique hat racks and vanities are charming throwbacks, though some mattresses could use updating. Out front are two tables where you can take breakfast in the sun. There's a restaurant just for guests, and the staff will also pack you a picnic upon request.

Stroll along the Zattere to the mysteriously underrated Gesuati, a baroque church flanked with intriguing paintings by Tintoretto and Sebastiano Ricci and capped with stunning Tiepolo trompe l'œil ceilings that seem to bring the sunshine indoors.
This house was built in 1500 and for the past century has belonged to the Seguso family, who converted their home to a guesthouse during World War I.
