Along a quiet canal just a few minutes' walk from Piazza San Marco, this friendly family-run hotel has modest yet cheerful guestrooms and a giddy rooftop terrace.Run by the same family since 1956, this easygoing inn has 23 bedrooms spread over three floors that are spacious, painted in upbeat pastels, and kept gleamingly clean. Guestrooms have been updated with a superabundance of blonde-wood furniture that suggests a pillaging of IKEA, yet the rooms facing the canal remain resolutely cheerful and sunny. Bear in mind that rooms come with or without en suite bathroom, and you may be pressed for choice in the busy high season. Stone engravings by a Venetian artist are a conversation starter in the 1st-floor living room, and if you climb the stairs to the 4th floor you'll find a terrace overlooking the rooftops peeking over to the top of Basilica di San Marco and the campanile (bell tower).

While you're in the neighbourhood, visit the Palazzo Querini-Stampalia, a 16th-century palace updated by Venice's starchitect Carlo Scarpa with an Islamic-inspired, industrial-chic entry and a garden criss-crossed with irrigation channels. Scarpa mentored modernist Mario Botta, who built the minimalist library and cafe.
The year before Ettore bought the hotel, his daughter Silvana was born, so he named the hotel after her. She is now an English teacher and her sister Sandra runs the Locanda.
