Lonely Planet review

Biennale-bound travellers find a home away from their home-design catalogues in this unexpected showplace of minimalist design right near the historic Ghetto.

The shadowy entry passageway may seem daunting, but the courtyard is sunny and shipshape, with tight angles, steel railings, and canvas awnings strung like sails overhead. It's less like checking into a hotel than boarding the good ship minimalism - but the guestrooms are more personable and inviting. The rooms are generously sized for Venice, with room to navigate around king-sized wenge platform beds. Above hang oversized, Futurist-inspired abstract paintings by Michele Pornaro, the owner's brother, with comparatively teensy flat-screen TVs positioned high on the opposite wall. Many rooms come with balconies, two rooms are built to accommodate disabled guests, and spacious room 208 could house a Damien Hirst entourage. Service is efficient but brisk - don't expect much more than a map from front-desk staff.
