Don't let the poker face of the Bauer's stark 1930s travertine facade fool you: in a separate wing facing the Grand Canal is Il Palazzo, an elegant 18th-century Venetian Gothic palace updated in 2000 with a multi-million dollar renovation for maximum luxury.

Even standard doubles here are rightly called palatial, with walls and sprawling beds sheathed in shimmering, signature Bevilaqua fabrics, and antique Seguso Murano chandeliers crowning gilt-edge ceilings. Venetian owner Francesca Bortolotto Possati's grandfather was a savvy collector of art and antiques, and family heirlooms give this palace its personality. And then there are the amenities: walk-in closets, wi-fi, marble bathrooms with whirlpool baths. The suites have two marble bathrooms so you never have to wait for the shower. The fitness centre offers a sauna, steam room, personal trainers, and rooftop Jacuzzi from which you can see the Alps on a clear day. Beyond personal butlers and massages, Bauer staff will also set you up with tango lessons, personal shoppers, and private opera concerts.
