Parkhotel Schönbrunn has two factors which give it that special edge: a direct connection to Franz Josef, and it's the closest you'll get to sleeping in Schönbrunn without breaking in to the palace after hours and rolling out your sleeping bag.

Franz Josef, the Habsburg's penultimate Emperor, had more than a hand in the hotel's conception; he had it built specifically as his guesthouse in 1907 (any self-respecting Emperor needs all 1441 rooms in the palace for himself, of course) and painted the Schönbrunn yellow which still highlights the facade today. The hotel's public spaces reflect this connection - ubiquitous portraits of the emperor line the hallways, and pseudo-antique furniture and dark-wood panelling is everywhere. Rooms are fairly standard and reasonably spacious (those on the lower floors have exceptionally high ceilings), and come with modern furniture, twin beds, and plenty natural light; balconies are attached to those facing busy Hietzinger Hauptstrasse. The hotel's four suites, which take pole position on the building's corners, are a far more interesting option.
