Browse through the reception's collection of signed photos and tablecloths of famous figures from the past century and it immediately becomes clear that the Sacher is more than just a hotel, it's an institution. A family-run institution with elegant rooms and impeccable service.Walking through the front doors of the Sacher is like turning back the clock 100 years. The reception, with its dark-wood panelling, deep red shades and heavy gold chandelier, is reminiscent of an expensive fin de siècle bordello and the connecting Blue Bar (amazingly, totally blue), sporting oriental ceramics and silk wallpaper, looks as though it's transported directly from the Forgotten City. Both alone are worth stopping in for a peek. The smallest rooms are surprisingly large, with beds the size of small ships, while suites are truly palatial and often come with views of the Staatsoper. All are fashioned with baroque furnishings and genuine 19th-century oil paintings (the hotel has the largest private oil painting collection in Austria); bathrooms are entirely modern. The top floor is given over to a high-tech spa complex, with herbal sauna, ice fountain and fitness room.

If you can drag yourself away from Café Sacher downstairs, wander across to the excellent Albertina and Hofburg, before a night out at the Staatsoper.
Hotel Sacher was opened in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, son of the creator of the Sachertorte, the favourite chocolate cake of Emperor Franz Josef and now the darling of the sweet-tooth world.
