Hotels often attempt to boost their image through self-proclaimed catch-phrases of excellence, which frequently miss their mark. Das Tyrol however hits the bullseye; 'small luxury hotel' is about as accurate as you can get for this boutique residence on Vienna's main shopping street.

Recently enjoying a complete makeover, Das Tyrol now ranks among the top design-hotels in the city. Art inches into every corner of its interior, at times creating a gallery rather than a hotel; you half expect to find a gaggle of well-dressed art critics in the corridor, clutching their champagne flutes and gushing over one painting or another. Each floor is devoted to one theme or another, and it's not always serious or abstract; the third floor is given over to Donald Duck and his love interest, Daisy. Rooms, which are a subdued mix of greens and yellows, are cosy but spacious enough to fit a small couch and desk, while bathrooms are a spotless combination of black-and-white tiling. Try for a corner room and enjoy a small balcony overlooking busy Mariahilfer Strasse. Breakfast will keep you going for most of the day, and is served with champagne.
