From the crystal chandeliers hanging from the coffered ceilings to the Oriental rugs on the marble floor, the St Regis embodies the grandeur its dignified limestone facade suggests. And there's attitude to boot: this high-end outpost of the Starwood lodging empire makes certain that you never mistake it for the Sheraton.Opened as the Carlton in 1926, the St Regis is one of a handful of top-end dowagers from the era that continue to serve the moneyed set. Like a Republican hack, the hotel makes every effort to trade on its proximity to the White House. The 193 rooms and suites are a metaphor for life in that they are often not as big as you'd expect. Still, no expense has been spared and their rich fabrics encompass gold, beige and green - what some would call the colours of money. Whereas the arch-competitors at this end of town in terms of price range, the Hay-Adams and the Willard, have an engaging sense of self, the St Regis ultimately feels like an outpost of a chain. Those spiky orchids adorning the admittedly showplace lobby can be found in every hotel lobby at this price point the world over.

Custom-fitted dark suits are the norm in the lobby of the St Regis, and that's just on the poodles of the matron guests. This is a buttoned-down place and should you scurry through the lobby in casual duds, your passage may arch an eyebrow or two. Take an energetic walk a few blocks north on Connecticut Ave NW and you'll enter the orbit of Dupont Circle fun.
