This classic pre-Depression hotel brings French authority and attitude to the DC luxury hotel market. Little touches abound like the sculpted reliefs set in the otherwise sober limestone facade. Rooms have been thoroughly updated and boast the kind of bathroom you'd pay a remodeller to install in your own home. The French flag flying over the entrance might as well be all red for jingoists and Conservatives. Others however, appreciate the long relationship between France and the US, going back to when Lafayette saved the Americans' collective butt from the British during the Revolution. All is smiles and warmth from the French-accented desk staff. While the public spaces are miniscule, there is a fine - and most unusual - collection of high quality books in a little library nook. The 237 rooms are lavish in an Architectural Digest sort of way. Clean lines and natural fibres provide a backdrop for the plush bedding. The bathrooms are light and roomy, featuring deep soaking tubs. The room service menu is reason enough to stay in.

The Sofitel's bar and cafe (not so imaginatively named Le Bar and Café 15 respectively) both have tables in season out on 15th St. These are something of a rarity in this part of town and definitely worth seeking out on nice days. Taunt passing politicians with: 'Hey! Have you leaked today?'
