This well-maintained hotel is a DC outpost of the revered family-run grand hotel in Dallas. The Melrose here isn't held in quite the same esteem but the 240 units are comfortable and the location on a good stretch of Pennsylvania Ave is close to Georgetown.Like an airline inflight magazine, much of DC's architecture is designed to neither stimulate or offend. The Melrose is no exception. Its bland eight-storey exterior is replicated all over town. Fortunately things improve once you cross under the large navy-blue canopy. The lobby is not posh but does have a certain elegance thanks to the marble floors. However, you'd do best to skip the Library, the in-house bar where the books are limited to those depicted on the wallpaper. The larger-than-average rooms have seating areas and work desks. Colours occupy the federal spectrum of gold and blue. The Melrose largely caters to a mixed crowd of mid-level business travellers, international guests and package tourists. There's nothing flash here, but like that inflight mag, it helps pass the time and is quickly forgotten when you're through.

Every evening that it's not pouring rain or ugly with snow, there's a non-stop passing parade of professionals marching home along Pennsylvania Ave. You can enjoy the nightly migration from sidewalk tables in front of the Melrose. Otherwise you'll find sustenance in many forms less than 10 minutes west in Georgetown.
