Topping many 'best hotels in Washington' lists, the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel is perched atop Rock Creek Park's south end. This five-star property looks boxy and plain on the outside, but inside are the opulent touches that justify the price.

Everything about the Four Seasons on the outside screams bland. But that perception changes when you enter the seemingly modest lobby. Then you notice the art: there's a museum's worth of fine American paintings by the likes of Mathew Daub (look for his 1951 '231st & E Broadway'). The cafe, Garden Terrace, is shielded from passers-by a very cool indoor grove of bamboo while noise is masked by artful little fountains here and there. Pretty soon you realise that, while the Four Seasons dates from the modest era when Jimmy Carter told Americans to wear sweaters for warmth, its triumph is in the details. Rooms feature original American photographs set against an alluring palette of greens and lavender. Staff are simply superb: discreet and attentive. Rooms in the southeast corner enjoy river views.
