This upscale inn is housed in two stately brick 1883 Victorian row houses, just one block north of the circle. This is as close as you get to feeling like a resident of one of DC's most liveable neighbourhoods. Rooms come in many stripes, all are comfortable with a mix of antiques and comfortable modern furniture. Each of the eight rooms here has a name rather than a number. Among the most popular choices is the Plum Suite, which not only sounds like something out of the board game Cluedo but also features beautiful stained glass with plum and amber inserts. All the guest rooms and suites have private baths with claw-foot tubs or Jacuzzis. Some have TVs. Breakfasts feature high end pastries from local bakers; in the afternoon there's cookies and lemonade, the latter can be enjoyed at the delightful garden table out front while observing the passing parade. The mix of business travellers and pleasure-seeking couples find congress in the elegant sitting rooms. Those with a musical bent can tickle the ivories on the window-lit grand piano.

The biggest problem with staying in Dupont Circle is trying to decide what to do. But the easiest - and possibly wisest - choice is just across Q St NW from the Inn: Kramerbooks is open late and has a great selection of books (many being polemics that the majority in Congress would just as soon ban). Out back there's a great cafe serving bistro fare until the wee hours of the morning.
