A real gem among the many top end hotels in DC, the Jefferson benefits from its owners: an old New York family who have adopted the property and are giving it the kind of care usually reserved for a beloved dowager aunt. This elegant, two-winged 1923 mansion projects a stately charm for its eight-storey facade. It boasts an ornate porte-cochere, Beaux-Arts architecture and splendid public spaces with arched ceilings featuring carved plaster details. At night, candles give the lobby a romantic glow which reflects off the marble floors. Alcoves off the ground floor hare filled with plants and are perfect spots for a secluded tête-à-tête. The 100 antique-furnished rooms are luxurious and feature double-glazed windows so as to minimise outside intrusions. The decor is a muted palette of rich browns and yellows. The most requested rooms face 16th St where they enjoy the morning sun. Look for ones ending in 03, 05 and 09. The solicitous staff are helpful and friendly without being unctuous.
