Appropriate to its name and locale, this international-looking hotel has a majestic, flag-draped, Georgian entrance. Converted from a posh residential hotel, the Westin has all the familiar luxuries of the chain, including the enveloping beds and much-copied bathrooms. This is a good spot for business travellers in a convenient location.

A young Al Gore lived in this historic hotel as a youth while his father served as senator from Tennessee. Many other luminaries have called this eight-storey edifice home since it was built in 1924. The hotel's interior decor retains suave touches of the period. The lobby is pretty low-key but is fitted out with several kinds of marble set off by brass details. Carved plaster enlivens the ceiling. The 208 rooms have old-fashioned posh furniture that would have looked right at home in the building's heyday and include lots of plush down fittings and large, accommodating bathrooms (one key difference, rooms in the 1930s cost 4.00 a day). The banquet facilities are befitting of a small coronation.
