Lonely Planet review

Outside the capital, Danish hostels are often pretty low-key, heart-warming affairs, offering basic but comfy accommodation and decent facilities, and drawing an interesting mix of international backpackers, local families and groups, and assorted wayward travellers. This is a textbook Danhostel, 3km (2mi) north of the city centre, set in leafy green woods.

The main building here is as pretty as a picture, a large octagonal room that was a dancehall in a previous life, and now serves as the reception and breakfast area. Accommodation in nearby 70s-style buildings is bright and basic, and standard rates apply whether there are one or four people in the room (a boon for groups and families). You'll pay extra for a private bathroom, for breakfast, or to hire linen. Communal facilities are as you might expect - including a functional kitchen, lovely reading room and a billiards room - but it's the gorgeous grounds that hold the real appeal, as well as the surrounding forest and nearby beach and sea baths. You're out of the city action, but there are frequent buses - or you can access the city bikes between May and October, available for a small deposit from the local Risskov bus stop.
