Don't expect lace curtains at the Carneros Inn. A chic, sleek design aesthetic and retro-agricultural theme shatters the predictable Wine Country mold. If the sky's the limit, book your weekend romantic here, surrounded by acres of vineyards, apple orchards and farmland. The 86 semidetached, corrugated metal units look like itinerant housing - in fact, they were styled on barns, silos and ranchers' cottages. But inside they're überchic, with cherry-wood floors, ultrasuede headboards, bright white duvets, chocolate leather club chairs and wood-burning fireplaces made of sleek poured concrete. Bathrooms are equally luxe, with heated-tile bathroom floors, giant soaking tubs and indoor-outdoor showers with plate-disc rain showerheads. With all of this, you won't even want to turn on the flat-panel TV or in-room DVD player. King bedrooms are a tad small, as the bed fills the room, and breakfast is not included, although there are fine on-site restaurants. Know that the Inn is pretty far out in the countryside, and is almost as close to Sonoma as to Northern Napa. Opt for the vineyard-view rooms if you can.

Everyone comes to Wine Country to booze it up. The best designated driver might be in the engine of the Napa Valley Wine Train, which lets you sip in style during three-hour daily trips in vintage Pullman dining cars, from Napa to St Helena and back. In the swanky club car, lounge in swivel armchairs with fringes brushing the Victorian-style carpet, watching vineyards roll past. Lunch is additional.
