With nine impeccably landscaped gardens, complete with boxwood-hedge mazes, MacArthur Place stands to rival any posh British manor house. The 1880s estate is surrounded by several whitewashed cottages, all freestanding and nestled beneath century-old trees. In true estate tradition, rooms have top-end, conservative furnishings, but also the latest bells and whistles. This is especially true of the luxurious suites - with amenities like surround-sound systems, they're meant to make you feel at (your weekend country) home. Furnishings are exquisite, if somewhat staid and conservative (think hardwood and Laura Ashley-type prints). All the same, it's hard to argue when you're basking in the glow of the wood-burning fireplace or soaking in the outdoor tub of the private garden (every spa suite has one). Book one of these when you're going for all-out romance and the sky's the limit. By far, this is the best top-end spot in the town of Sonoma - don't even think of bringing the kids.

In downtown Sonoma, skip the touristy cheese store on the plaza and visit Vella Cheese (315 Second St East), which is known for its dry jack (made here since the thirties). Also try the mezzo secco, with a rind dusted in cocoa powder. If you're on your way home, they'll vacuum-pack your purchase for the ride.
