Address: Bahnhofstrasse 15 , Garmisch-partenkirchen 82467, Germany
It doesn't get much better than this: an elegant, three-winged luxury hotel stacked with perks, a wine bar and a top-notch gourmet restaurant. The very comfortable rooms have touches of royalty and splendid mountain views. Most celebrities visiting Garmisch-Partenkirchen end up here.Like so many resort hotels on the Alpine rim, the amenities are of a high standard that would be wallet-draining but for the extra distance from money centres like Munich. In the lobby are throne chairs and an oil painting glorifying the hunt, a theme extended in the rooms, which recall the princes who packed a hunting rifle on holiday. Of the suites, the Haus Alpsitz caught our fancy for its vast expanse of dark wood panelling and a latticed partition between bedroom and den. A side entrance is plastered with newspaper clippings of all the great and good who have graced Reindl's sheets.

The cable car ride to the top of the Zugspitze (2964m/9724ft) is a suitably swaying prelude to a view that extends into four countries. On 'Germany's rooftop', as it's known, you can wander into Austria at a border crossing that was a joke while border controls existed. Back in town, don't miss an evening at the Bräustüberl, a quintessentially Bavarian eatery with dirndl-clad waitresses.
The villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen were merged to host the 1936 Winter Olympics and chosen again for the 1940 Games, which were never held.
