The concrete-and-glass exterior of this riverside hotel has all the appeal of a municipal car park, but don't be put off by appearances - inside you'll discover one of the city's slickest, most fashion-forward places to stay.

Bristol's dockside is choc-a-bloc with big corporate hotels, but the Brigstow is by far and away the best of the bunch. The plate glass windows and gleaming wood floors of the lobby set the designer tone, and the same sleek, minimalist aesthetic is carried into the upstairs bedrooms. Floating beds, curved wood-panel walls and modern fabrics conjure an altogether more upmarket atmosphere than you'll find at most chain-run hotels, although the regimented corridors and functional design can make it feel a tad impersonal. The tiny plasma-screen TVs set into the bathroom tiles are a bit gimmicky, but they're a nice touch nonetheless, and fit in well with the overall futuristic feel. Only the superior rooms have a balcony, and if you're spending this kind of money you'll definitely want a river view.
