This ornate Victorian pile has been a Bristol institution since it first opened its brass-knobbed doors in 1863, and it's still one of the city's top places to stay. If it's king-sized rooms, starchy service and a traditional atmosphere you're after, then look no further.

Beautifully situated overlooking the grassy arc of College Green, just steps from the city's cathedral, the four-star Royal lives up to its regal name. The imposing frontage is classically Victorian - all tall chimneys, bay windows and solid, no-nonsense stone - but sadly the interior isn't quite as impressive. Most of the hotel's original features have been swept away by successive refurbishments, and you'll be hard pushed to find much authentic Victoriana dotted around the 242 rooms. The emphasis is on modern convenience rather than period style. Queen size beds, work desks and huge TVs find their way into every room, and most have a pull-out sofa bed and a choice of foam or feather pillows (useful for family travellers); the upmarket suites also have four-poster beds. Downstairs there's a lovely Romanesque swimming pool, a swish champagne bar and an elegant drawing room. Needless to say, the service is impeccable.
