For decades a derelict eyesore on Iraklio harbour, this historic building has been stunningly transformed into an elegant city and business hotel. The design is top class and the panoramic views from the rooftop restaurant and bar are impressive.Built on a Venetian bastion in 1925 by a citrus merchant, the Megaron was the first multistorey building in Crete. During the 1930s it was the city's political, social, economic and spiritual centre. It was damaged by an explosion during WWII and remained a derelict eyesore until it opened in 2003 as a luxury hotel. Apart from its impressive architectural features, the attention to detail is obvious from the room accessories to the comfortable mattresses (the owners tested a different mattress every week for six months before selecting them). Even if you can't stay the night, it is worth a trip to the Megaron's rooftop bar and restaurant, which has impressive views of the harbour fortress and a unique pool with glass portholes. Rooms have plasma-screen TVs, faxes, and all the expected amenities - the wow factor turned up several notches in the impressive VIP suites.

Iraklio's must-see Archeological Museum has one of the most important collections in Greece, including antiquities from the Minoan Palace of Knossos. The capital is slowly becoming more attractive, with major waterfront redevelopment and many streets in the old town turned over to pedestrians. A walk through the town can be surprisingly rewarding and the city has some of Crete's best dining and bars.
