This triangular boutique hotel wears its 'art' moniker with a justified swagger. Rooms and public areas essentially double as a giant gallery showing off the works of Dresden-born contemporary artist AR Penck. His provocative standard tx sculpture (of a naked man) graces the rooftop.

Fans of Italian design will likely have fits of euphoria in this stylish yet playful retreat. Designer Denis Santachiara has added plenty of quirky touches, starting in the soaring lobby, where the reception hides within a giant yellow egg. Rooms feature such mould-breaking features as a flickering light column (called a welcome flag) that magically activates as you enter. The window between bathroom and bedroom can be set to opaque or see-through, depending on your need for privacy. The desk slides out to reveal a closet. The nicest rooms are the larger 'art suites', which treat you to the full Altstadt panorama. A cafe serves snacks and coffee, and at dinnertime you can pick from a potpourri of international dishes at the restaurant. Waist-watchers can work off the carbs in the small fitness room with more great views.
