With old-fashioned parquet floors and designer blue, red or yellow room furnishings, this place manages to feel both warm and uncluttered. The wonderful synthesis of new and old continues in the breakfast room in the front of the building, where two thin marble columns don't disrupt superb lake views.

The Alsterblick is located in a 19th-century terraced apartment building, the rest of which is occupied by local residents. So returning here of an evening, you really feel as if you're coming home. The heavy glass-etched doors and marble facade give way to an old bird-cage lift and a stairwell featuring stained glass windows. However, the wooden floors and clean lines of the furniture mean the bedrooms feel more streamlined. Originally occupying the ground floor alone, the Alsterblick has recently expanded into part of the first level. Up here you'll find slightly more spacious rooms with sienna-coloured furnishings and, in two cases, balconies. Indeed, room No. 21 provides a bit of a talking point: comically, you step straight from its bathroom to the balcony overlooking the street and lake!
