There's nothing shy and retiring about SIDE. This is a statement hotel, as you'll realise the moment you step into its spectacular eight-storey, slit-shaped atrium. High above you is a lounge strewn with brightly coloured circular sofas, plus achingly minimalist white rooms, with brown bed throws and frosted glass bathrooms.

SIDE is certainly not a place for those who find design hotels pretentious. If, however, you enjoy modern style with a dash of verve, colour and even wit, you'll be in heaven here. While the superior and deluxe rooms are relatively zen - think dark wood, white gauze curtains, bamboo cuttings and glass wash basins on bathroom benches - the suites boast playful touches. Each takes one bright colour as its theme and splashes it around, so that one features a blood red bath, for example, another a banana yellow tub and so on. The eye-catching 'Lounge Supersassis' comes courtesy of Italian designer Matteo Thun and represents a vision of the future common in the 1950s. Are those sofas flying saucers from The Jetsons or do they remind you more of Smarties with ears? Order a drink, you could be debating it all evening.
