There's nothing shy and retiring about SIDE. This is a statement hotel, as you'll realise the moment you step into its spectacular eight-storey, slit-shaped atrium. High above you is a lounge strewn with brightly coloured circular sofas, plus achingly minimalist white rooms, with brown bed throws and frosted glass bathrooms.SIDE is certainly not a place for those who find design hotels pretentious. If, however, you enjoy modern style with a dash of verve, colour and even wit, you'll be in heaven here. While the superior and deluxe rooms are relatively zen - think dark wood, white gauze curtains, bamboo cuttings and glass wash basins on bathroom benches - the suites boast playful touches. Each takes one bright colour as its theme and splashes it around, so that one features a blood red bath, for example, another a banana yellow tub and so on. The eye-catching 'Lounge Supersassis' comes courtesy of Italian designer Matteo Thun and represents a vision of the future common in the 1950s. Are those sofas flying saucers from The Jetsons or do they remind you more of Smarties with ears? Order a drink, you could be debating it all evening.

No Hamburg hotel is better located for the Staatsoper (opera) and orchestra performances at the Musikhalle, where classical music star Simone Young is artistic director. You're also well-placed for Alster Lake cruises or a little retail therapy along the chic streets of Colonnaden, Jungfernsteig and Neue Wall. Although it's downtown, this part of Hamburg can be very quiet on weekends and evenings.
