The five-star Hilton is one of the most-established upmarket hotels in town, dating from an era when the Parque Central was still considered a safe area. Its trump cards are a convenient location for museum-hopping and lofty views of the concrete jungle from the top floors.

These days you'll hear warnings about the hotel's dodgy surroundings, but culture vultures won't mind: two of the city's most formidable theatres and all the major museums are within easy walking distance. Two towers, dating from the 1960s and 80s, are linked by an arcade with travel agencies, airline offices and restaurants. A skylit dome crowns the central reception pavilion, where a helpful info booth keeps guests abreast of happenings off and on the premises. And there's plenty to keep you busy on-site: you'll find a couple of swimming pools, playground and tennis courts, plus a state-of-the-art gym and sauna scattered around the rambling grounds. Cream-toned guest rooms feature wi-fi and views toward the centre or eastern suburbs through floor-to-ceiling windows, though the furniture could stand an upgrade.
