Caracas' largest and most luxurious hotel, the Gran Meliá stands in stark contrast to its blighted surroundings. Entering off the trashy, chaotic streets of Sabana Grande, it's like walking onto a movie set. Less than a decade old, the hotel nevertheless cultivates a classic elegance - no postmodern posturing here. The 432-room Gran Meliá, flanked by two additional towers of guest apartments, has about everything you could wish for, including a huge fitness centre and no fewer than five restaurants. The grand lobby is an extravagant blur of chandeliers, statuary and Oriental tapestries on marble floors, all aimed at the classy corporate traveller. An old-world warmth permeates the guest rooms as well, with carved-wood headboards, brocade curtains and fine antique-style furniture. Bathrooms combine class with modern convenience, featuring gold-framed mirrors, Jacuzzi baths and hairdryers. Added luxuries include bathrobes and slippers and a pillow menu. Skyscrapers ring the recently refurbished lower-deck pool, complete with fountain. Another pool, as well as a sauna, a couple of Jacuzzis and dozens of work-out machines keep guests active in the fabulous fitness centre.

Though hotel staff will warn you to stay off the surrounding streets at any hour, adventurous souls might head for the Boulevard de Sabana Grande, a block north. Flooded with illicit vendor activity until recently, the long pedestrian promenade has reportedly been cleared, and should again make for a pleasant stroll. More cautious visitors can poke around the El Recreo shopping mall next door.
