This fantastic YHA hostel has one of the most spectacular spots in Britain, nestled right beside the old lighthouse overlooking Lizard Point. It's hugely popular with walkers on the South West Coast Path and travellers looking for some coastal R&R.

The sturdy, white-washed building formerly served as a Victorian hotel, but has recently been refurbished in impressive five-star style, and is now arguably one of the smartest and most desirable hostels in Cornwall. As always with YHA establishments, the decor is a little utilitarian - pre-fab furniture and low-maintenance colour schemes are definitely the order of the day - but there are stunning coastal views from almost every window. The rooms are small, modern and simple; there are a couple of triples, quads and quins available, as well as a six-bed dorm, so families and backpacking groups are both well catered for. There's no TV lounge or cafeteria, but there's a decent-sized kitchen, a self-service laundry and a small on-site shop, and staff are well clued-up on all the local activities and beauty spots nearby. Hard to fault.
