East is no run-of-the-mill design hotel. Housed in a former iron foundry, it's banished any industrial hangover with irregular plant-like shapes, striated, uneven finishes and deep, rich colours that hark back to Mother Nature. Rooms are imaginatively open plan, but the centrepiece is undoubtedly the jaw-dropping sunken restaurant.

From the outset, East has an enveloping and reassuring, almost womb-like feel. Just inside the front door is the bar, where globular lights remind you of raindrops and stool legs look like tree roots. Next comes the sunken restaurant, where huge, striated white columns resemble tree trunks - or billowing cloth. On the far wall is a honeycomb structure housing a bar/lounge. Somehow it all gels in the most aesthetically pleasing manner, making this a top meeting spot for Hamburg hipsters. Afterwards, the rooms seem relatively sober, but they do continue Chicago-based architect Jordan Mozer's organic theme. The washbasin, unusually positioned behind the bed's headboard, is a silver bean-pod and its concrete stand has a bark texture. The headboard and chairs also take forest shapes. The shower is only closed off by a frosted glass door, so there's no hiding your blushes from room-mates here.
