Among the first of the really trendy hotels to open in Leeds, the Park Plaza has stood up well to both time and the latest competition with its skyscraper Zen look and pared back style. This hotel could so easily have been a case of all style, no substance, but it's skilfully avoided all charges of looking pretty without having a clue what it's doing.

And it really is terribly pretty, starting with the self-consciously stylish staff who lead you to the sleek elevators (the proper English term 'lift' seems so inappropriate here) and up to your room, as slick and modern as you could imagine seeing anywhere. The suites on the upper floors (Nos 16 to 20) look like they could double up as the private quarters on the starship Enterprise, only the view is not unknown galaxies but the city of Leeds and, in the far-off distance, Brontë country. Downstairs, the bar is as popular with outside punters looking for a trendy cocktail as it is with hotel guests, while the Chino Latino restaurant serves up a fusion of Central American dishes with an Asian twist. Sounds weird, but it actually works.
