Leeds' oldest hotel got a much-needed makeover and can now compete with the rest. The rooms are tidy, modern if a little small, but the central location - close to restaurants, nightlife and the train station - is second-to-none.

With a main entrance almost hidden around the side, you'd think the hotel didn't want to attract guests, or that it had become somewhat lackadaisical, considering that it's the oldest hotel in town. We suspect the truth tends towards the latter, in spite of its recent much-needed facelift. The hotel's rooms are fine: large enough, with nothing especially inviting about them, nor anything we need to warn you off about. No, the Golden Lion is a perfectly adequate hotel that is a throwback to an earlier age, when business was far less cut-throat and competition a hell of a lot thinner.
