A beautiful little budget choice - rooms are OK, with parquetry floors and firm beds. Kitchen access and a sunny courtyard are other bonuses. Staff offer reduced rates for weekly or monthly stays, with or without kitchen use. This is Xela's original backpackers hostel, and there's no doubt you'll be able to catch up with some other travellers and swap tales here. The kitchen is well-appointed and clean, with free drinking water. The courtyard area has plenty of sofas lying around where Spanish students tend to congregate, hunkered over text books. There's also a six-seater dining table in the kitchen area (just in case you were thinking of entertaining in a formal fashion). The dorms are more spacious than most, with only six beds per room.

Just around the corner from the hostel is one of the city's most famous landmarks, the Puente Los Chocoyos, a stone bridge that's a favourite meeting and gossiping point. While you're here, drop into Moet's, a mellow little neighbourhood bar that serves excellent coffee.
