Behind a stately Art Nouveau facade awaits the surprisingly modern Leipzig instalment of this small hotel chain. It's a decent mid-range option just a few steps from the main train station, making it convenient if you're rolling into town late or need to hustle out early. The hotel flaunts a pedigree harking back to 1913 but has been completely gutted and now sports all the trappings you'd expect from a contemporary hospitality zone. The decor oddly teeters between Vogue and Vegas. They could do without those strangely patterned carpets, but the rooms are comfy and the Roman-inspired wellness area is better than most. All single rooms face the super-quiet courtyard, but noise disturbance isn't a big issue in the doubles either, since most overlook the pedestrianised Nikolaistrasse. Don't miss a ride in the lift, which feels like stepping into a fun-house mirror. Regulars give kudos to the extra-lavish breakfast buffet served downstairs in the Steaktrain restaurant. This is a neat place, actually, made to resemble the Orient Express with miniature-train table lamps, dark wood, leather booths and a no-nonsense surf 'n turf (seafood and meat) menu.

The Nikolaikirche, a corner stone in the Velvet Revolution that brought about the collapse of the GDR is only a two-minute walk from the Seaside via Nikolaistrasse. It's an unusually decorated neoclassical church with pillars made to resemble palm trees.
