If you've outgrown hostels, but still look for value when it comes to lodging, this place may well be the answer to your prayers. It's in a quiet residential street, yet within a Frisbee toss of Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, Leipzig's student-flavoured pub and nightlife drag.

Everything works like a well-oiled machine at the Markgraf, which is no surprise since the proprietor's family has been in the hospitality business for eight generations. Don't expect flights of fancy when it comes to the decor (eg, Picasso prints) but the quality furniture, strong showers and well-thought-out room layouts still add up to a fine experience. The nicest rooms in the main (front) building overlook the Kornerpark, a pretty little square billowing with rhododendrons. For more panache and elbow room, book one of the apartments in the ultra-quiet back building reached via a teensy garden. A recent makeover has produced a chic Mediterranean look with terracotta-tiled floors and a nice, fresh colour scheme. The same back building also houses the sauna, although it's not much to write home about and doesn't even have changing facilities.
