Being that Manaus is practically devoid of places to stay with any sense of history, the Palace stands out like a shining star. But it's not just the lack of competition - convenience and comfort also make it a solid mid-range option.

The building's ornate, 18th-century facade has been cared for and painted with a careful hand. There aren't many like it in downtown Manaus, and just its appearance in this bustling commercial area soothes the eyes. Historical preservation laws thankfully prevent changing the appearance of the building, so the original tall doors that act as windows for street-facing rooms have been maintained. Two sides of the building border busy avenues, so for a little more quiet, try for one on Avenida 7 de Setembro (which isn't on bus lines) or the back side. The rooms are pleasant and bright, with crisp sheets and wood furniture. The tiny bathrooms have brown '50s-style tile work.
