This luxurious country estate hotel was voted the Northeast's best large hotel in 2006, and it's not difficult to see why. This superb place simply oozes style and class within its surprisingly varied rooms.

This privately owned hotel belongs to Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett (don't you know). They have overseen the conversion of what was already a stunning Victorian stately home into a boutique property that has us clinging to the banisters so as not to leave. The 53 bedrooms are a surprisingly mixed bag of styles, from opulent traditional (four-poster beds, antique furniture) to modern minimalist, with a somewhat disappointing dash business bland thrown in for good measure. A relatively new spa and leisure centre - complete with 16m swimming pool - has been very good for business (the hotel is very popular with wedding parties), while the challenging 18-hole golf course on the grounds make the Matfen a first-choice destination for golfing enthusiasts. The Library and Print Room restaurant might read like a clumsy mouthful, but the food is absolutely superb.
