This local institution features a gamut of offerings. Beware: while upstairs doubles feel crisp and comfortable, some of the backyard digs are barely a step above garage living. Still, positivity rules in the colorful rooms bedecked with potted plants and a general nature-loving vibe.

Tree-huggers swarm ¡École! like bees to the Ulmo tree. Not just a hostal, this North American/Chilean organisation supports worthwhile environmental projects in the south of Chile. On site you'll find a responsible adventure tour outfitter and a much-lauded restaurant preparing fresh bread, scrumptious salads and health food. While shared dorms are grunge-basic (bring your own sleeping bag), the private rooms feature coordinating cream-coloured linens and spotless baths. Backpack straps pulling you down? Get a massage or take some yoga classes. Relaxing spaces include the wi-fi-wired living room with L-shaped sofa and woodstove, and the leafy inner courtyard. It's the spot to dine divinely, meet heaps of Swedes and Canadians and tap the pulse of local environmental issues. Needless to say, reservations are a must. The unheated dorms close in winter.
