Not quite the romantic beauty you were dreaming of when planning your trip to Salzburg, perhaps, but the ramshackle Pension Adlerhof is competitively priced and useful if you're catching an early morning train. Avoid the front-facing rooms on busy Elisabethstrasse if you possibly can.Station quarter hotels are rarely in the most beautiful of neighbourhoods, and the Adlerhof is no exception. It's surrounded by internet cafes, dodgy nightclubs and a couple of low-rent sex shops, but don't let the dingy location put you off. Inside, the hotel still boasts traces of its original baroque architecture and, with its musty corridors, faded wallpaper and faintly turn-of-the-century atmosphere, it feels rather like stepping onto the set of an Agatha Christie adaptation (keep your eyes peeled for small Belgian men with pencil-thin moustaches). The three budget rooms really are budget, with a shared toilet and bathroom, drab decor and the kind of space that would put your average rabbit hutch to shame; the rest of the rooms are a tad plusher, with satellite TV and ensuite bathrooms. A few even have canopied beds and views over a quiet courtyard.

Since you're so close to the train station, how about taking a day trip to the Salzkammergut - sometimes known as Austria's Lake District, and an absolute paradise for hikers, bikers and outdoorsy types.
The Adlerhof was originally built as an apartment block in 1900. In the '20s and '30s, the building housed the 'Victoria' Café, frequently referred to as the 'Café Sei stad!' (the 'Be Quiet! Café') by local residents, and was later a favourite hangout for American GIs after WWII.
