Perched on the banks of the Salzach River, this stately old pile oozes culture and class from every hand-carved corner. Gleaming brass fixtures, glittering chandeliers and original oils decorate the grand public rooms, and the pick of the palatial bedrooms have balconies with sweeping views over the old town and the Festung Hohensalzburg.Originally constructed as the Österreichischer Hof between 1863 and 1866, the hotel established itself as a favourite haunt for the city's aristocratic elite during the late 19th century. These days it remains the venue of choice for well-heeled tourists and overnighting celebrities (Tom Hanks, Placido Domingo and the Dalai Lama have all added their names to the guestbook), although it's been run since 1988 by the Gürtler family, who also own the original Hotel Sacher in Vienna. Rooms range from standard doubles to presidential suites; all are individually styled with luxuriant drapes, designer wallpaper and rich fabrics, and the top rooms boast marble bathrooms and private sitting areas. All the top-end extras are present and correct: there's a business centre, fitness suite, currency exchange and 24-hour concierge, not to mention a brace of gourmet restaurants and a private piano bar. Just remember to pack your black tie.

You couldn't stay at the Hotel Sacher and not try its signature dish: Sachertorte, a rich chocolate cake invented by the 16-year old apprentice chef Franz Sacher in 1832. It's best tasted at the lovely riverside Café Sacher on the ground floor of the hotel, but if you fancy taking some home with you, it's also sold in various sizes at the boutique shop. If you're staying at the hotel, you'll get a miniature version every night at turndown.
