Address: Kaigasse 33 , Salzburg 5010, Austria Show on map
Beautifully situated in one of the city's prettiest quarters, this eccentric hotel has perhaps the most extraordinary foyer in all of Salzburg - a fantastically over-the-top concoction of painted cherubs and pastoral frescoes, offset by flower-filled pots and mock-Grecian arches. The same mix of kitschy style and baroque excess runs through the whole hotel. Some rooms are decorated with Persian rugs and oil paintings, while others boast lavish antique beds, mahogany wardrobes and Biedermeier furniture. The cheaper doubles are spacious and well-equipped with showers, colour TVs and radios, but the bathrooms are a little pokey. Opt for the larger 'Paracelsus' and 'Hohensalzburg' rooms if you can, or splash out on the lavish 'Leopoldskron' suite, which comes with two interconnected double rooms. There's also a solarium and sauna offering Ayurvedic massages and steam baths, as well as an Italian bistro on the ground floor. With its classically Austrian atmosphere and idiosyncratic style, the Kasererbräu has long been a favourite of many Salzburg visitors, and it's not too hard to see why.

The Nonnberg Abbey just to the east of Kaigasse was founded in 714, making it one of the oldest nunneries in Europe but it's more famous these days as the location for Maria's convent in The Sound Of Music. The opening scenes, where Maria arrives late for Mass, and the escape scene, where the cars are waiting outside the abbey gate, were all filmed here.
