Standing proud on the square, this is a grand Salzburg affair catering for guests with money to burn. If it's liveried doormen, starchy service and Baroque grandeur you're after, then the quietly stylish Bristol certainly won't disappoint.

Built in 1890 in a glorious spot just steps from the Mirabell Gardens, this hotel has been welcoming well-heeled guests through its doors for well over a century. Franz Josef I, Sigmund Freud and, (more importantly) members of the cast of The Sound of Music have all stayed here, so the Bristol has certainly received the celebrity seal of approval. While not quite as exclusive as it once was, it's still a supremely graceful hotel that merits every single one of its five stars. The rooms are decorated in rococo tones of pink, scarlet, cream and gold and positively brim with original features, from corniced ceilings to sparkling chandeliers. A few also boast arched windows and small wrought-iron balconies overlooking the square. There's also a choice of restaurants, a sun-filled lobby hung with antique tapestries and a classic piano bar that's straight out of Casablanca. Classy - real classy.
