The Dylan's opening in 2006 made glamourpusses salivate at the thought of sampling the 'sensual' pleasures of this decor-conscious hotel - who doesn't want to get sexy between crisp Frette linen sheets? But it only really appeals to those that don't do demure.

From the outside, the Dylan promises much. At the bottom of a lovely cul-de-sac in one of the city's most eye-catching neighbourhoods, the hotel sets out its style mantra with its swanky bar, which confidently matches minimalist ottomans with neo-Baroque mirrors and Art Deco tables. No style is too silly or out of place here, and while the rooms are unquestionably luxurious (lots of big, light-flooding windows and glammy touches including, in one case, a ceiling mirror above the bed), critics - and there have been many - have railed that it's trying just too damn hard. Although we admire the artistic extravagances that make this one of the more memorable hotels in town, the Dylan is just a little too much like Carrie Bradshaw: unquestionably stylish, but does she have to wear all of them at the same time?
